Is the South direction auspicious or inauspicious?
Although the South is an auspicious direction, there is a misunderstanding about it among the people. The reason for this is that a Lokpal has been appointed for every direction. According to him, the Lokpal of the South direction is Yama. Due to fear and ignorance in the minds of common people, there was contempt and hatred about Yama and the South direction started being considered avoidable. This hatred reached such a point that When the south direction was mentioned in the yajna process, that word was removed and it was referred to as 'avachi'.
On closer consideration, should Yama and his south direction really be considered inauspicious or avoidable? This is a very complex question. If Yama had not performed his duty, how terrible would have been the disaster? Just the thought of this gives me goosebumps. How can Yama, who takes to his world those living beings whose body has become unfit for this world or whose work in this world has been completed, and who removes their faults and purifies them, be contemptible?
Yama means regulation or control. Regulation is required in every small and big action in the world. Therefore, in yajna rituals, especially in peace rituals, Yama is mentioned with insistence and he is also worshipped. At the beginning of any ritual, the doer faces towards the east and the rituals are started from the south and then carried out in the north direction. Yamraj and his Yamalok are in the south. The path of evolution is from south to north and finally the dissolution is again in the south.
Not only this, the great magnet in the belly of the earth is from south to north. The body of a great God like Shankar faces south. It is a popular belief that one's house should not face south. Since south is a very holy direction, the same purity has to be maintained in the house as well. In Yagya rituals, there is a practice of washing hands after doing the ritual in the south direction.
According to the scriptures, sleeping with the feet facing south is prohibited. There is a health scientific fact behind this rule. There is a kind of attraction-repulsion in every atom and particle of the world. Every particle is attracted towards some big particle. As a result, every micro particle has a rotation speed. The earth is also attracted towards the sun due to gravity. The sun itself is also attracted towards the sun which is bigger than it. The world is constantly attracted towards the star named 'Dhruv'. The body's molecules and particles are attracted in the direction in which the Pole Star is facing. The food material inside the stomach is also attracted in a subtle way from that direction.
Therefore, by sleeping with the feet towards the north, the body automatically gets its benefits as the attraction of all the micro fibres of the body is in the opposite direction. On the contrary, by sleeping with the feet towards the south, the attraction of all the micro fibres of the body is in the opposite direction. Therefore, there is a slowdown in the process of food digestion Disturbances arise. Apart from this, the head feels tired due to the reverse movement of the nerve fibers. As a result, sleep is not able to provide proper solution. Due to this, bad dreams are seen continuously. That is why the scriptures say that one should never sleep with the feet facing south.
