Why circumambulate the idol of a deity?

The divine aura remains from the centre of the place where the idol has been consecrated to a certain distance. It is more intense when one is near and decreases with distance. Thus, by circumambulating the idol, one can easily receive the radiance emanating from the aura of the divine power. But it is worth noting here that the movement of the aura of the divine power is southward. That is why in the scriptures, it is prescribed to circumambulate the idol from the right hand side. This is also the meaning of calling circumambulation as pradakshina.  It should be known that on doing Parikrama in the reverse direction i.e. Vamvarti (from the left hand side), there is a collision between the speed of the divine energy's aura and the divine atoms present inside us. As a result, our radiance is destroyed. That is why the left-hand Parikrama is considered forbidden. Here it should be kept in mind that the ill-effects of doing Parikrama in the reverse direction knowingly or unknowingly are sure to be borne.

By doing Parikrama of the idol after religious acts like Puja-Paath and Abhishek etc., the desired wish is fulfilled immediately. In the scriptures, instructions have been given with reference to various deities as to how many times Parikrama should be done around which deity. For example, three Parikramas are done around Lord Krishna. There is a rule of doing one Parikrama of Bhagwati Durga. But while doing Parikrama of Shivling, it is a rule not to cross the stream of Abhishek. It is believed that the waves of the radiance of Lord Shankar move on both the left and right sides.
